I need to iron out exactly the rest of the back story so that I can really figure out how I want the lights and whatnot, but I do think I'm going to stray away from the blood and guts in fear of looking too much like CSI's miniature killer.
The light we used was a small LED flashlight that we quickly learned was nowhere near the type of lighting we actually need. The lights are outstandingly bright and have way too strong of a cone shaped light. Everything is just so harsh. We talked to the good people over at Bull Street Station, the miniature train store, and they explained to us we were looking at getting LED bulbs that are the size of a grain of wheat or rice. Those are crazy small little bulbs. I'm going to have Stephen explain the general idea of the electricity and the construction of the building in his post. That all being said, I took pictures of some of the lighting and it's really dynamic and I thought I would share. Again... ignore pikachu.

The last picture here is just no lights, just a general idea of the layout thus far and how light hits it without limitations.

Calculations: Round 2

I'm glad we decided to make the apartments bigger instead of making my scale smaller, because most dollhouse scales work off 3/4in = 1ft, so if I were to use any prefabricated items as a base, they would not be the right scale, nor would any of the minis that I had already finished. So after all that cutting and tongue and grooving... it was all done over so everything looked pleasing and not so cluttered.
The one problem we did run across was the long hallway and dining area. Originally there were double door size entryways leading to the living room and the hallway. Unfortunately the way it was set up, there was no logical traffic pattern once I added the furniture. We knocked down the dining room walls and shortened the entry "hallway" to make a great deal more room for furniture. It's a very open floor plan, which works wonderfully with all of the set ups, it's just hard for me to recompile my ideas based off the completely different floor layout style. It had become much like a studio apartment.
The pictures below are the walls and rough flooring of the apartments. There are going to be cabinets over the gaps in the kitchen area (the notepad is a space holder), metal door jams (or something like it), trim, window treatments and doors. There's also going to be a whole lot of things in the apartments, and I'm really excited to film my process of putting each of them together.

The quarter is to show you the general size of the bed and apartments. If you haven't noticed already, this stuff is really really tiny. The couch now has pillows and no pikachu (don't ask, I needed something amusing for scale). The fridge also isn't finished, so Don't worry I know this isn't exactly motivating as far as my actual talent goes. Baby steps, my friends. Keep in mind that this is only 1 apartment of the 6. All the apartments are going to fit into the outer shell of the building but I'll have a demonstration of Stephen assembling it, when the time comes.

Okay now I didn't tell you I had finished the beds did I? Well based on what you know about the tenants, see if you can guess whose bed is whose. They're cluttered, yes, BUT that's part of the challenge.

Also, for those of you wondering what any reference to "the cave" may be... it's my little workshop, where the wonderful world of little tiny things are made. Glance into my world.

Calculations: Round 1

Sorry, sorry for not having updated sooner but I'm about to post a few in a row to catch up... minor camera/computer difficulties, no worries.
Thank you to the lovely Jennifer Mark, I got some wonderful floor plans, apartment layouts and some very confusing but ultimately very correct measurements. Anyway, Stephen Bodiford and I went to work making things to the scale everyone had decided on, which was 3/4in = 1ft. I went to work crafting all the photos, labels, etc. as you have seen in the previous posts as well as starting in making all 6 beds. I calculated all of the measurements of everything using my scale ruler so I knew everything had to be right (in theory). Well Stephen went ahead and cut all of the wood for the apartments based on Jen's drawings and had it all ready to put together when we realized how large the bed I had made actually looked in the apartment. I had told Jen to make each apartment as close to a foot wide as possible, so that I could keep it a reasonable size. Turns out, when you ask the designer to do things against norm, you sacrifice things... like space. The apartment she drew came up to be a little over 300 square feet. That's tiny, itty bitty tiny. Since at this point time is of the essence, Stephen drew up the new plans which worked well for him since hes building the "dollhouse" itself. The new plans are twice as large which yields an enormous project, but still not quite as big as Mexico (still haven't forgotten about it, I ran into difficulties filming). I'll let you see what we had first and then you can see what we're working with now.

That's about how far I got with the beds, I had pretty much completed this one when we realized the size problem.

That's the floor plan that Jen had made. You can see the bed parts in the background (Queen Size), so you understand the footage problem we were having. All the lines under that carpet that's going down, are walls. It was very small, compact even.<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v8.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D59d4c2ff21895bea%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1332881784%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D2512FD0CB8A136A5901896A888D862DC981086CE.63BAB88BFA12A5D413F08EE684316FE1C71DFA90%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D59d4c2ff21895bea%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DGS2ZhcpURcZhzt4nM9QAzDwdtNY&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

The video above is much of Stephen's hard work cutting and fitting the first run of the apartments. There is going to be a detailed front of an apartment building that opens up to reveal 6 apartments (two on each floor like the example on the left). Each apartment was rented by people living completely different lives and tells the story of them based on how and what was left behind. The tenants were the old cat lady, the nerdy tech guy, the frat-boy bachelor pad, the homey couple, the oriental couple, the business woman by day/s&m enthusiast by night.

Based off each apartment, the viewer should be able to piece together the story of each tenant's life. The city has been evacuated last minute, leaving evidence of life around every corner. The scene starts outside a deserted building, a red searchlight flashing in the background accompanied by an evacuation siren. A light flickers on and the camera moves through the doorways of a building revealing the lobby then it raises up to reveal different floors one at a time. I plan on making several different miniature scenes showing different lives of the people who once inhabited the places and tie them all together in a short video.

A big inspiration is Alan Wolfson's miniatures, but I am going to break from just doing storefronts and interiors and work on more residential as well.

<img style="display: block; As you can see in the video updates, the pink foam was all carved out and then spackled to fill the cracks. I spray painted the entire board, then I made a mixture of elmer's glue and water, painted it over the spray paint, and poured dirt and sand over it and spread it around. I placed and fit all the houses, added more sand and dirt and brushed away the excess. The walls were added and connected with stained wooden dowels.

The trees were made with twigs from trees and lichen for making miniature foliage. I mixed the colors of the lichen to suit my liking. I added rocks, sticks and stumps that I found in the floral section of the store (I think they were supposed to be like the pebbles you fill vases up with).

It's coming along. Take a look.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v20.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D85f769831fe868a0%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1332881784%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D597E3EA6C0D1FEE82E0421171A588E1C5F313496.1C6A6A7BA7AC80CA040C75C34FB96AE854267617%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D85f769831fe868a0%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DltNPrnw91GrwBK5iuN4gMqlX8xo&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Color!

Mexico now has color... All I need is the connector pieces which are just columns, so that's not really a concern considering I have a million wooden columns that just need some paint once I figure out where the walls are going. These are sporadic brick walls throughout the landscape, not the border wall. The above picture is the process of carving the bricks, the different stages. In the time lapse below, you will see how the bricks are painted.

Several more houses have also been added to the scene with many more following. There are more houses waiting to be painted and the houses that are "finished" are waiting for finishing touches such as doors and windows which they will all get at the very end.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v17.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D73b54d493246bb06%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1332881784%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D40DB8F8C7D62F732162E32A3ED945C6A687E5E4C.1FDD6059A14DFD946709AA73D16F9EF130C37B3C%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D73b54d493246bb06%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DlOpQHdum8qsDxx3-po4XudpqYyM&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I have cut mother forms and am going to vary the details of the houses. So, although they may have the same basic shape, they will differ in color, texture, roofing, door and window placement, etc. I'm going to check out some fun stationary papers to see if I can get a really high corrugated panel for some of the roofing. I have looked at boxes, but they seem too flat, and I know that once I rip off the outer layer, it won't look very good.

More cutting and more testing to come!

House Revamp

After finishing the first house I posted, I realized the scale was incredibly off. I'm using 1/32 scale to match my matchbox cars and I guess I forgot to compare them when I was building so I ended up redoing it. The first picture is a comparison of the first house and the 2nd smaller version I did. The 2nd picture is of the 3 newly completed houses with the scale car so that you can see the size.

The houses were made using mainly the same techniques as the first one I built but obviously different alterations of it. Thanks to foamwerks, cutting the foamcore has been much much easier!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_avJds2eoIvQ/TKSQ-4ulqqI/AAAAAAAAACU/JU72uyl3uG8/s320/IMG_1418.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522698453117151906" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_avJds2eoIvQ/TKSQ_OIhFmI/AAAAAAAAACc/oNJp_4tjUIQ/s320/IMG_1415.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522698458863048290" />

Here they are individually::

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_avJds2eoIvQ/TKSSDWox0VI/AAAAAAAAAC0/lWeUD-yZRFk/s320/IMG_1414.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522699629376950610" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_avJds2eoIvQ/TKSSDJNBOII/AAAAAAAAACs/KfdBdsFYvYU/s320/IMG_1408.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522699625770858626" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_avJds2eoIvQ/TKSSC-U8zpI/AAAAAAAAACk/W5ugQVpkkEc/s320/IMG_1404.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522699622851333778" />

1st House!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_avJds2eoIvQ/TKK_YUtcXUI/AAAAAAAAACE/GfsrcfwCsXc/s320/IMG_1355.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522186517706726722" />

Above is the first house I have been working on for Nogales. It's a really beaten up one, as you can see. It needs a couple more layers of paint detail but because of all of the glue that's on it, it is taking some time to dry. It's made out of white foam core that i riped pieces of the coating off to expose and detail the foam (the bricks). The coated part was brushed with some water and glue and I put dirt on it. I then painted the dirt and that's what gives the outside that texture. It looks very jungle-esque right now, but I plan to change that with the next couple paint layers. The tops of the bricks need to be lightened and the stucco needs to be whitened.

Below were the preliminary sketches of some houses I was playing with for scaling and size. If you look to the right you can see the 1/32 scale car model I used for reference.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_avJds2eoIvQ/TKLAXzi0ZNI/AAAAAAAAACM/xMZU_UADHyo/s320/IMG_1346.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522187608315421906" />

Building the City

I started drawing out some house designs based off of pictures of Nogales. It's a terribly decrepit city so not all of the houses are all there and none of them are very big, or fancy. They're generally earth tones with some reds and bright blues mixed in (the kind of blue that you find cheap pools painted with).

I decided to build the base of the landscape with pink foam and build it up. I need to start creating the houses first so I know how to shape the landscape, but I'm trying to think about what materials would be best to build them with. I think some of the roofs would be really cool using the corrugated part of corrugated cardboard (you know, so it looks like those aluminum spanish houses). I don't know if making the houses out of cardboard is my best best. I'm trying to do this low budget but I don't want it to look cheap. I did learn some cool tricks at Charged though. Will glued sand to the outside of cardboard and made it look like stucco, so I may see how that looks and do a couple run throughs, maybe even use foam board or hard board (since I have a lot of both).

Here's some more pictures of Nogales and the houses that I'm building. I have some sketches and pictures of the trucks I still have to upload, COMING SOON!

NOTE::: The 2nd picture needs to be clicked on to really see it...

Hybrids and Matchbox Trucks!

So I finally found affordable matchbox trucks! It's going to be the first part of it, so the pan of Nogales Mexico and the truck driving down the road. The picture above is of Nogales. I intend to recreate the cityscape in miniatures. I'm basing the size of my city around the side of the truck. I believe the most efficient way of doing it is to have 2 trucks, one small one to drive down the road and one bigger one so that I can zoom up on it and not have to make the city 20 feet long. I'm looking for a miniature truck online so that I have something to base my larger truck off of when I build it by hand. I'm hoping for the city to be a few feet long by a few feet deep. The miniature car will be about 3 or 4 inches long. The picture below is the truck I hope to use.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_avJds2eoIvQ/TJbjH12XvxI/AAAAAAAAAB8/6Hd7WJSoDsg/s320/1959StudebakerFarmTruck-nov19a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518848117242838802" />

Documentation

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_avJds2eoIvQ/S0YW69-UiHI/AAAAAAAAABc/GC-8prJe_N0/s320/SHIP_000001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424048003538520178" />
I figured out how I'm going to document my progress. I have my tripod set up in the corner of my room and my cannon set to live view from my computer. I am going to invest in a remote snap so I can take pictures while I'm actually working on it. I plan to keep my point and shoot handy to take close ups of small items/details I may be working on. I'm posting a picture of the framing of my workspace so you can get an idea of what this is going to look like. Eventually I may have to change the setup but I think for now it'll be okay. As long as there are a few seconds of each static background it should look okay as a time lapse. Ideally it would be one static background but i think that is nearly impossible with what I have.

Concepts

So I decided to start drawing some more concepts. I drew one based purely on Roman ships, mythology and art that I really like. It's just a rough concept but it's kind of cool... I think I'm going to color it in just to have it pop even more. It needs more on deck and some more things in the back to balance it, but it's just a work in progress. Here's what I have so far:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_avJds2eoIvQ/SwDzLtymmeI/AAAAAAAAAAg/i42y6gpp4hE/s320/Photo+109.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404586935440546274" />

SACKED

After talking to Joe for awhile about Influenza and why I was doing it, we both realized that I was spending a lot of time on something that was going to benefit me very little. If I want to be a model maker, making a film is not going to help me. Why use real pigs when I can use puppets? This was a question I've had since April but most people said it made no sense to use puppets when real pigs were available. Of a ten minute film, there would ultimately be one minute or so that would even be considered for my demo reel. That seems like a lot of extra work for something that wont help me. I'm not a story teller, a filmmaker, or an effects artist. Yes, I can composite okay and that's ultimately my fall back plan if for some reason I can't what I want or something closer to what I want. Rotoscoping isn't hard and no one wants to do it, so there's always that option...

So I ultimately decided not to proceed with the project and instead do several smaller projects. At the moment, I'm entertaining some of the following ideas:

H1N1 PSA - I've spent all this time on Influenza, why not use some of the work I did to create a little PSA? It could be motion graphics, stop motion, miniatures and just some fun little things I can composite all together to create something fun and exciting or maybe even plain scary. Get your shots, kids, or you're gonna turn to into swine!

Airship - Okay, so this was an idea I really liked when I was developing concepts back in the beginning of the year. I didn't proceed because I couldn't think of a good story. I don't need a story, I can just make it fly and do a turn-around. This big, gold ship is modeled after greek mythology. The gryphon head on front caws to ward off enemies and instead of sails, its graceful wings flap through the air. I just think it would be cool to make something mechanic and metal since I usually make soft, hokey or natural.

Armored Animal - I always wanted to make a fur puppet. I know they're hard to work with but it'd be an ode to the founders, to Harryhousen and O'Brien. My interest in making metal things and making things look majestic and powerful is where the armor comes in. I'm liking armored leopard...

Crustaceans & Scorpions - I realized that these critters would make beautiful yet simple little puppets. Because of the way they are structured, each joint separates different parts of the critter making it easy to break down. Instead of having to worry about skin, fur, feathers and anything else that may get in the way, these can be made of little pieces that fit into each other like puzzle pieces and joined together between each piece. They would essentially be made up of ball-and-socket type joints. It's be an easy puppet that if planned correctly could be made in under a week.

Other than that I know I want to make a set of some sort, but I'm not sure what. Maybe something destroyed, maybe the slums of Brazil, (think of The Incredible Hulk landscape as a miniature) maybe even a haunted house or cool building. Still not sure here.

I'm happy though, I'll have variety now and I don't have to worry about everything fitting together stylistically.

New Script and Some Progress

I finished my new script the other day and Met with my Producer Andrew McClelland to go over what our next steps are and try attempt to secure a DP. After asking a couple of other farm owners, we were pointed in the direction of a swine farm. After driving through suburbia for awhile, we saw some pigs on the right side of the road. I promptly pulled over, despite the fact they were black pigs, potbellies I presume. "Beggers can't be choosers" I said to my cousin as we walked over to two men cutting a metal barrel. It was slightly sketchy, so I was glad I wasn't alone. I spoke to the simple man about my movie and my need for pigs. He pointed to the other side of the road to a bunch of PINK pigs running around in the brush. That was EXACTLY what I needed. I had found my farm, and the man could not have been more excited that his pigs were going to be in a "moooovie." I'm going back to see him soon with some of my crew so that they can have a better idea of what we're working with.

Another Rewrite

After finishing my animatic and going over it with Joe, we agreed that the story needed a little umph. They aren't high quality drawings, but that's not the point. It was to see timing and get the general idea of shots. It's about 6 minutes now. I know there are some breaks in the sound, I had to add some pauses that I didn't anticipate in the soundtrack. It's really cool. I finished the rough run through of my script with a bit of music. Jen and Chris did the voice acting and they are not the actual actors (it's over the top at the moment but that's just to get the idea). Here's what I have so far so you can get an idea of how it's going to play out. I should have the animatic by the end of the week and it will start to make a lot more sense.

Pig Farms

So after going to Seed and Feed today, I was pointed in the same direction as I was last time, but this time I realized what I thought was a misunderstanding, was not. The farm on Tony Branch (not Olive Branch) does have pigs. I'm told they're crazy and unpredictable, but I really don't care, as long as the equipment is okay, we're fine. It may make for some funny outtakes.

I'm going to go check it out early next week. Looks like stuff is coming together. I added a Photographer and Make-Up artist as well. Mara will be taking care of both of those for me.

Getting My Foot in the Door

So I finally have this thing rolling. The 9 page script is finally finished and I am so excited. I have my visual effects broken down and my character descriptions sent to the casting office. Things I need to do:
1. Secure a DP and a producer
2. Talk to Wardrobe
3. Finish Storyboards
4. Get My Color Guide
5. Design the miniatures!

So far, people who I have staffed:

Production Designer: Jennifer Mark
Sound Design: Kelly Sandstrom & John Nickinson

More to come...
